Computer inserted Gamakams - Samples of Notation

Samples of plain notation and notation with notes inserted by the computer for gamakams are given below. For an explanation of the Gaayaka notation format click here. The main changes are use of brackets "(" and ")" for showing higher kalams (instead lines above the notes), use of upper case and lower case for showing the 3 sthaayis and use of "<" and ">" symbols for small increase or decrease of pitch. A dot "." is used for half a note duration (half of a comma ",")

As the above notation is in Gaayaka format it may not be very clear for those accustomed to the conventional notation, the same notations in the usual format used in Tamil and transliterated into English is given below. The converted notation is on the first line followed by the standard simple notation in the second line and in the case of Swarajathi, the third line shows the lyric. The symbols "<" and ">" represent minute changes in pitch and a dot is used to indicate half aksharam duration in addition to comma for full note duration and semicolon for 2 notes' duration.
